Spring Into Art workshops - April 2013 schedule

Unique hands-on weekend art workshops in exciting art media including glass-blowing, painting, mixed-media, ceramics, jewelry and more. Two-day weekend art workshops include one-on-one instruction with local professional artists and fees include supplies, materials and instruction needed. If a materials fee applies, you will be notified. A continental breakfast will be provided at morning check-ins. Check with your instructor on whether to bring a lunch or if there will be time to visit one of Laguna's fine restaurants.

"Hand-built Whimsical Ceramics" with Walter Reiss

walter-reiss-teapotCeramicist Walter Reiss will demonstrate spontaneous soft slab techniques, impressing and deforming textures by stretching, twisting and tearing. Reiss will instruct students on how to create unique whimsical teapots and wall pieces with many ideas to take home. This is a hands-on workshop, so wear clay clothes.

Reiss has been a clay artist for 40 years. His exhibition history includes the Monarch National Clay Competition, Ceramic USA and the recent San Angelo Museum National Clay Competition. Reiss is Merit Award Winner in the 1995 Fletcher Challenge International Clay Competition.

Walter describes his work as a combination of dark whimsy using the plastic properties of clay to realize his vision. His numerous awards include the International Fletcher Challenge Award.


"Digital Photography" with Mary Hurlbut

Learn the art of seeing light, while also having those pesky technical questions answered in plain English!  Please bring your digital camera and the manual it came with.  Wear shoes for walking.  We will spend time in the classroom covering the basics of using your digital camera and some of the "art" of photography.  You will also receive a handout to help you remember all we cover.

Then we'll get outside for a walking tour of the area to practice all you've learned before returning to the class and uploading the images to a computer for viewing and discussion.  Please feel free to make a list of any questions you have about digital photography and email them to Mary one week prior to the class:  hurlbut.mary@gmail.com.

Mary considers all of Laguna Beach her "studio" and knows the secret spots: hidden coves, quiet trails, and urban alleys. She knows the tides, weather, and seasons of her hometown. Mary loves swimming in the ocean, hiking Laguna's coastal hills, library books, good coffee, sailing on wild, windy days, and most of all, spending time with my family and friends.

With over 20 years experience, our professional glassblowers will teach students how to blow glass and experience the process of turning molten glass into awesome works of art. Hands-on basic and intermediate skills in glassblowing. At the end of the weekend students will have artwork they have personally created. Class size limit 4 students.

sia_instructor_christopher_jeffriesAfter graduating from Chico State University with a degree in Fine Art, Christopher continued on to study sculpture and design at Lorenzo de Medici in Italy. He then traveled throughout North America, working with professional artists.  His desire for more knowledge and skill led him to the Czech Republic, where an apprenticeship with master glassblower Igor Muller allowed Christopher to acquire the fine techniques and designs that inspired his career.  Christopher was then fortunate to attract the attention of Dale Chihuly and serve an apprenticeship at the prestigious Boat House in Seattle.  Recently, he was honored with the opportunity to teach at the historic Corning Museum of Glass in New York.


"Printmaking - Make Mine Monotype" with Hedy Buzanhedy_buzan_pulling_monotype

In this fun class you will explore additive, reductive and stencil monotypes using water based inks.  No drawing skills required, just an open mind and a willingness to experiment.

hedy-buzanHedy Buzan was born in Laguna Beach, California. She studied printmaking at UC Santa Cruz where she received BFA certification. After graduation she printed her own lithographs and those of other artists at Pine Flat Press in Santa Cruz and at Bluestone Editions in Seattle; then joined the Peace Corps and served in the West Indies. This led to a job teaching drawing at the Edna Manley School of Art in Kingston, Jamaica. She returned to the United States and received a MFA in Design at The George Washington University.

Hedy Buzan is currently on the adjunct faculty staff at Saddleback Community College where she is called upon to teach courses in Drawing, Design, Printmaking and Mixed Media/ Collage. Ms. Buzanʼs studio is located at the Laguna Canyon Artists Complex on Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach.

sia_instructor_gavin_heathA native of Capetown, South Africa, Gavin has been blowing glass since 1987, studying the art at Palomar, Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, and Cal State Fullerton.  He is a 20-year exhibitor in the Sawdust Art Festival and the Festival of the Arts.  Exhibits of his work have also been mounted at Art Expo New York and various other venues.  Among the many collectors of Gavin's work are Aaron Spelling and Nelson Mandela.

Muffin was a professional golfer for 21 years.  She "fell into glass" 6 years ago and fell in love with the art.  She was apprenticed to John Barber for four years and has been an exhibitor at the Sawdust Art Festival for 4 years, teaching solo and with Gavin for the past couple of years.

 

 


"Oil Painting Workshop" with John Eagle

Come paint a colorful seascape and landscape in oils with Laguna artist John Eagle. Learn about design values. Color mixing will be emphasized. Beginning to intermediate artists are welcome. 

John Eagle was born in Ashtabula, Ohio. He grew up in Hawaii and the San Francisco Bay area. His artistic career began in San Jose, California, where he completed his undergraduate degree. Post graduate studies include Otis Art Institute Los Angeles and the Laguna College of Art & Design. His style developed from exposure to many types of art, and natural scenes, and a great love for the style of French Impressionists. He is nationally known for his impressionist scenes of the Laguna Beach area. John is a registered artist in Who's Who in American Art.

"Jewelry Fabrication" with David Nelson

david-nelson-jewelry In this class you will learn basic and advanced jewelry design and fabrication using sheet metal and wire. Incorporate gemstones in your design using bezel setting, overlay construction and piercing with the jeweler's saw and other fabrication methods. Students will also learn soldering with acetylene, as well as buffing and polishing techniques.

When David first exhibited in the Sawdust Art Festival 43 years ago it was as a pen and ink/watercolor artist.  A self-taught jeweler with a background in design, David has been a popular teacher here at the festival.


"Forging a Silver Bracelet" with Mike Heintzheintz


In this two-day class, students will be introduced to tools and techniques of a basic jewelry workshop, including sawing, soldering, sanding, anvil forging, filing and finishing. Students will walk away with something they will treasure for a lifetime, while acquiring information that instructor Mike Heintz developed over decades. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn from Master Jeweler Mike Heintz. This rare class is limited to four students, so register now! Registration fee includes $50 for silver.

"Mixed Media Bunny" with Patti Klingenmeierpatti_klingenmeier_sia_rabbit

Create a 3-dimensional rabbit using paper clay and polymer clay along with a variety of other mixed materials.  Students will sculpt, paint, design, wire, hand sew and embellish in this fun two-day class.  Both days are necessary to complete your piece.

sia_instructor_patti_klingenmeierPatti is a 33 year veteran exhibitor of the Sawdust Art Festival.  She has always shown her polymer clay people in over 700 different sports, occupations and just fun people.  Four years ago she started creating multi-media fairies and the bunnies "sprung" from there.  A crafter who has always enjoyed creating in many mediums, this is one of her newest projects that she is eager to share. Come create one of these special display dolls for yourself or a loved one.

 


"Pottery" with Mark Winnerwinner_ceramic-bowl

The class will cover basic throwing skills and techniques on the potter's wheel including centering the clay, pulling the clay into a cylinder, forming the clay into basic shapes of bowls and vases. Students will use the basic tools, including the rib, to manipulate and form the clay shapes while throwing.

mark-winner-instructorArtist Mark Winner has created ceramics since 1981 in Laguna Beach, California.  He creates his unique ceramics in his studio home with his wife, Sue Winner, who is also an artist collaborating on some of his ceramic pieces with human form sculpture details.  Mark is a proud participant of the Laguna Beach Sawdust Festival for the past ten years creating fine ceramic pieces collected and treasured by many patrons.  His pieces have been shown in Ceramic Review, and Clay times Magazines.  Also interviewed for a television spot advertising the Laguna Beach Sawdust Festival and Mark's fine ceramic pieces he creates.


"Mixed Media Playtime" with Cherril Doty and Suzette Rosenthalsuzette_cherril_sia

Back by popular demand!  In this fun, ever-changing class you will learn to create mixed media backgrounds and learn the tricks to simple image transfer techniques you can use in any number of ways.  This class is for all levels from beginner to advanced student.  There is always more to learn. Come join the fun!

sia_instructors_suzette_and_cherrilSuzette and Cherril are Sawdust Art Festival artists with many years experience between them.  The two teamed up after teaching separately and have been teaching these fun-filled classes together for five years.  They are both mixed media artists with a host of techniques between them to share with their students who can't get enough and just keep coming back for more.

"Kumihimo Cord Braiding and Fused Glass Pendant" with Cindy Stalnakercindy_stalnaker_opal-kumi

Kumihimo is a Japanese form of braid-making, performed on a loom.  In this 2-day class, you'll learn to weave a kumihimo cord AND make a fused glass pendant to hang on it!  On day 1, we assemble and fire the pendants in the kiln.  Next, we start work on our looms, using a variety of satin cord colors.  The cord colors create beautiful patterns running along the length of the cord.  On day 2, we'll complete any required finish work on the pendants, and then complete the braiding!  Each class attendee will receive a loom kit to take with them, for future braiding projects!

sia_instructor_cindy_stalnakerCindy returned to her artistic roots in 2002, after a 22-year advertising career.  She studied Fine Arts at the Silvermine College of Art in New Canaan, CT; and Metalsmithing at Saddleback College, Mission Viejo, CA. She embarked on her "glass odyssey" by undertaking a comprehensive series of instruction throughout California; Murano, Italy; and Stockholm, Sweden.  Her current body of work includes fused and slumped glass, copper enameling, and lampwork glass beads. In 2009, she appeared on HGTV's That's Clever crafting program, demonstrating her techniques for a decorative fused glass platter and dichroic glass drawer pulls. A Laguna Beach resident, Cindy exhibits at both the summer Sawdust Art Festival, as well as the Sawdust's Winter Fantasy, and she is currently a member of the show's Board of Directors.

"Basics of Copper Enameling" with Julie Setterholmenameling_finish

Students will learn basic enameling techniques along with a bit of metal working.  We will be covering sifting, stenciling, sgraffito and more.  Each piece will be fired by the student and taken home that day.

sia_instructor_julie_setterholmJulie recalls the moment when, as a child, she realized not everything was made from machines in Taiwan--at the Sawdust Art Festival in her hometown of Laguna Beach she witnessed Dion Wright sculpting an amazing creature out of metal with a torch. Julie's first success at selling her own creations was with jewelry. Since then her art has evolved to enameling and then metal sculpture, using equipment passed on to her by her grandmother.  Julie works in copper, steel, and bronze to create both functional and sculptural art.

"Beginning Sign Painting" with Michael Brindleybrindley_signwork_sia

Michael will teach you how to make some money with this fun sign painting class.  Everyone needs a sign for something at some point, real fast!  Learn how.  No art experience required.  Just show up ready to learn all the ins and outs of sign painting and the tricks of the trade.

"Mixed Media - Visual Poetry" with Bette McIntiremcintire_daily_news_collage

Reimagine the day's news by making a collage with mixed media artist Bette McIntire.  Write a found poem using torn-out words and phrases from one day's newspaper.  Then with the materials at hand—pencils, paint, stamps, stencils, decorative papers and more—create a visual poem.  Bette will show you a variety of techniques that she uses in her Daily News Collages.

sia_instructor_better_mcintireBette, a self-taught artist, has always worked with words. She earned a BA in English from UCLA and an MA in Philosophy of Religion from Claremont Graduate University. She has worked as a freelance writer, an editor, and a bookseller. Now she creates visual poetry including images, words--and spaces. She exhibits each summer at the Sawdust Art Festival and has shown her work at Bistango Gallery/Restaurant in Irvine, Zinc Cafe in Laguna Beach, and the Tranquil Tea Lounge in Fullerton, California.

"Introduction to Glass Mosaic" with Rosanne Nittirosanne_nitti_mosaic_class

This two-part class introduces the student to the art of glass mosaics.  You will create a project made with stained glass pieces.  The first day will be about creating your design and attaching the tiles to your base.  On the second day you will grout and complete your piece, ready to take home and show off to your friends.

Her primary medium is Digital and Film photography with an emphasis on Black and White landmarks and familiar places. She wants to create art that stands off the page and is three dimensional. Branching out into other creative endeavors and with a previous background in stained glass, Rosanne has taken to making mosaic glass creations that are not only fun but calming.

"Printmaking - Back to Basics" with Brynne Cogornobrynne_cogorno_sia_class

In this printmaking class you will learn the basics of block printing and screen-printing.  Learn from eco-artist Brynne Cogorno, as she teaches you how to create a custom rubber stamp, and explore printing with found objects such as buttons, kitchen utensils, and potatoes.  You will learn the basics on composition, design, pattern and color.  Bonus, you get to go home with a lovely set of printed notes that grow, and your very own custom screen-printed tote bag.

sia_instructor_brynne_cogornoLocal Laguna Beach artist, Brynne Cogorno, has been creating art all her life.  She graduated from the University of Colorado in 2007, where she received bachelor of fine arts in painting and drawing.  Boulder is where Brynne learned the importance of living a sustainable life through the friends she met, and the people she worked with.  After moving back to her hometown, Brynne dreamed of creating an earth friendly stationery line.  She is currently a Sawdust Art Festival exhibitor, selling her stationery and t-shirt lines.
