Water Casting with Erin Elowe

necklace-waterWater Casting--In this workshop we will create unique and striking pieces by pouring molten silver into water.  This exciting and experimental casting technique will allow students to create beautiful abstract forms that can range from button or pearl-like shapes to dynamic splashes of silver.   Each student will have the opportunity to explore varied ways of melting and pouring in order to achieve the desired result, and will come away with a pair of dazzling earrings and/or a completely one of a kind pendant.

Please note: students 18 years or older; closed toe shoes/no flip flops; and feel free to bring your own silver and gold to melt.

Students will begin with a design set in copper before completing the sculptural silver earrings. Class also offers the option to add pearls and gems for extra dazzle.

ssac_lorrainehornbyRiveted Pendant - an exploration of texture and shape in metal.

Learn easy techniques to texture your metal and how to use a jeweler's saw to create shapes from sheet metal. Design a layered pendant with an elegant bail. All cold-connected by a hand-formed rivet.

Bio lorraine-hornby

I love the process of designing a new piece: thinking about color, balance, texture, and form. I spend many hours searching gem shows to find distinctive stones to include in my work. Each piece that I make is the culmination not only of this searching, but of time spent imagining many variations leading to the final design, and of the actual creation of the work.
