39TH ANNUAL SAWDUST ART FESTIVAL
TO RUN JULY 1 – SEPTEMBER 4 IN LAGUNA BEACH
The Sawdust Art Festival features 200 Laguna Beach artists exhibiting and
selling their original artwork in an enchanting canyon-side setting.

Laguna Beach, CA-The Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach will open its 39th season on July 1, and run through September 4, show organizers recently announced. This must-see event hosts 200 Laguna Beach artists each summer. Exciting live entertainment, featuring everything from jazz quartets to acrobats to surf bands, as well as three cafes and a saloon, make the Sawdust Art Festival a true festival of all arts – visual, performing & culinary!

Located in picturesque Laguna Canyon in the midst of a three-acre eucalyptus grove, the Sawdust Art Festival treats visitors to a relaxing setting. Majestic 100-year old trees shade and cool the grounds while two waterfalls add to the tranquil atmosphere. The beauty of the setting is perfectly complemented by the array of artwork exhibited.

Voted one of the top three art festivals in the nation by the readers of AmericanStyle Magazine, the Sawdust Art Festival attracts visitors from around the globe, including many celebrities. Recent visitors include The OC’s Peter Gallagher, Ed MacMahon, Muhammad Ali, and former Lakers coach Phil Jackson.

Thirty-year exhibitor Ken Denton remembers Barbra Streisand, Jonathan Winters, and the late Frank Zappa coming by and purchasing art from him.

Denton reminisces, “In the early 70s Frank Zappa and his friends would often stop over at any time of the night to peruse my creations. Zappa wrote "Kenny's Little Creatures on Display” in homage.”

All exhibitors at the Sawdust Art Festival must live in Laguna Beach and create their own original art. The non-profit Sawdust organization’s mission is two-fold: to educate the public about the art created in Laguna beach and to exist as a venue at which Laguna Beach artists can show their work to the public.

Founded in 1966 as a reaction against stuffy, judged art shows, the iconoclastic spirit of the show’s founders is alive today.

“The goal of the Sawdust is to be a place where artists are free to express themselves, be it in their art, their booth design or their attitude,” Spokesperson Rebecca Meekma explained. ”The Sawdust has a fun, unpretentious atmosphere that lets everyone have a good time.”

Festival-goers can meet the artists and discuss the art on view as well as purchase directly from them. Types of art available include painting, photography, hand blown and fused glass, fine jewelry, mosaics, fiber arts, sculpture, ceramics and hand-crafted furniture.

“I love meeting my customers and talking with them about my pieces,” said clothing designer and Sawdust Vice-president Debra Covern. “I can also custom-make items that are perfectly tailored to the client’s wishes.” Custom commissions are welcomed by all Sawdust exhibitors.

The 2005 Sawdust Art Festival runs July 1 – September 4 and is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. One-day adult admission is $7; seniors, $5.50; children 6 – 12, $2 and children 5 and younger are admitted for free. A Summer Season Pass, allowing unlimited entries is $14, while an Annual Pass, allowing unlimited entries to both the summer and winter shows is $20. The Sawdust Art Festival is located at 935 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach. For additional information, please visit SawdustArtFestival.org on the web or call 949-494-3030.
